"You are never alone!"
Pepper Scott
One time, during those last few months when Terry had lost his ability to speak and drifted in and out of coherence, I whispered in desperation, mostly to myself, “I feel so alone.”
Then I heard a faint reply: “Honey, don’t say that. You are never alone!”
Yesterday afternoon, the weather was so beautiful. I was outside with an acquaintance, showing him something on the wall, when a monarch butterfly appeared out of nowhere and landed on my little finger. It lingered for just a moment, then lifted off and disappeared.
Even now, I can still feel the soft brush of its tiny legs. Monarchs are rare here, which made the moment feel even more extraordinary. In that instant, I felt as though it was a visit from Terry. The thought stayed with me—tender and unshakable—transforming a brief encounter into something unforgettable.
It felt like a quiet miracle, just for me.
