Agent for the Resistance

Agent for the Resistance: A Belgian Saboteur in World War II by Herman Bodson is a powerful and deeply human account of courage during one of history’s darkest times.

The book follows Bodson’s journey as a member of the Belgian resistance, carrying out dangerous acts of sabotage and risking his life to help Allied forces. What makes this story especially compelling is its quiet honesty. There is no sense of self-glorification, only a steady, unwavering commitment to doing what is right.

Themes of moral courage, resilience, and the responsibility of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances run throughout the narrative. It’s a reminder that heroism is often not loud or celebrated in the moment, but instead lives in difficult choices made again and again.

What makes this book particularly meaningful to me is that Herman Bodson was not just an author or historical figure; he was someone I had the privilege of knowing in his later years. He and his wife, Tinca, were close friends and neighbors to my husband, Terry, when he first moved to a small high desert town in the early 1990s. In fact, the home Terry lived in was one Herman had built by hand for his daughter.

When I later came into Terry’s life, I had the chance to meet them both. They lived quietly, without any trace of the extraordinary past this book reveals. Yet their kindness, generosity, and openness to others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know them.

Reading this book, knowing the man behind it, adds a depth that is hard to describe. It is a powerful reminder that history is not as distant as it seems. It lives on in the people around us, often in the most unassuming ways.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in World War II history, stories of resistance, or simply in understanding what true courage looks like. More than anything, it is a testament to a life lived with integrity, humility, and quiet heroism.
