A Life Well Worn

by Dr. Larry Schreiber

Post Author: Pepper Scott

A Life Well Worn: A Collection of Personal Stories is a gentle and thoughtful collection of short stories from the life of Dr. Larry Schreiber. Through simple but meaningful moments, Larry reflects on the people he met, the experiences that shaped him, and the lessons that come from living a full and compassionate life. The stories feel personal and sincere, as if the reader is sitting with him while he shares memories gathered over many years of caring for others. Some of those years were dedicated to rescuing lives during the wartime conflict in the Mekong Delta. He brought light to the some of the daskest days of humanity.

This book holds a very special place in my heart because I had the privilege of knowing Larry personally.

Larry was my husband Terry’s doctor for more than a decade. The first time we met him, he insisted that we simply call him “Larry.” That small gesture immediately dissolved the usual distance between doctor and patient. From that moment on, every visit with him felt less like a medical appointment and more like spending time with a trusted friend.

Larry was one of the warmest and most compassionate human beings I have ever met. He cared deeply not only for Terry as his patient, but also for me as Terry’s full-time caregiver. That kindness meant more than words can express.

What truly made Larry remarkable was his spirit. He had an impeccable sense of humor, and every visit with him included genuine laughter. No matter how difficult the circumstances were, we always left his office feeling lighter. He had a rare gift for lifting people’s spirits.

Over the years, Larry shared that he had been writing small stories about his life. We were excited and looked forward to the day those stories would become a book.

Reading A Life Well Worn felt like sitting with Larry again and hearing him tell those stories in his own voice. The book reflects the same warmth, humility, and humanity that defined the way he practiced medicine and lived his life.

This book is a beautiful reminder of a life devoted to caring for others.

I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys thoughtful personal stories about kindness, compassion, and the meaning found in everyday human connections.
