Nuts!
Pepper Scott
Terry called out from the other room, his voice bubbling with mischief.
“Honey, come here! I have a joke for you.”
I answered, “Yeah?” though in my head I thought, Uh oh…
When I saw his face, I could tell he could barely contain himself. His eyes sparkled with the kind of excitement that meant he’d been working on this for a while.
“Have you ever heard people say, ‘You are what you eat’?” he asked.
“Yes,” I said, smiling, curious where this was going.
He grinned wide. “You are nuts!”
For a second, I blinked at him—“What?”—and then it hit me. We both burst out laughing, so hard that tears ran down our cheeks.
Later I found out he had been sitting on that little joke for hours, ever since I came home with bags of cashews, walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds for baking granola. He’d been waiting for just the right moment.
As I write this down now, I can’t help but laugh all over again, with tears in my eyes. I miss those moments so much—when he’d say, “Honey, I have a joke for you...”
